Structure of the internal mooting competition
- The first step towards mooting in the Jessup and ICC moot competitions – competing globally at the highest level – is to enter the internal moot competition. Save for the first round of each competition, the internal competition shall be run on a "knockout" basis with each round taking place on the date advertised in the Mooting Calendar, which will be displayed on the IL Moot Team website. The first round of the internal competition is a practice round. The practice round will be compulsory for any mooter wishing to take part in the competition. If students do not have a moot team partner the organisers will allocate a partner from the list of participating students.
- The organiser will draft moot problems in advance of the competition. The organiser will distribute the moot problem for each round to all mooters involved, by email, at least one week before the round is due to take place. The moot problem will also be available for download from the moot website. At the same time the organiser will advise each team whether it represents the appellant or the respondent.
- Subject to the rules regarding skeleton arguments and reference material, mooters will compete at the time and place specified in the published moot draw. A round consists of four participants, one Judge, and one Clerk. The order of submissions and timings are given below:
a) Junior Counsel for the Appellant (10 minutes)
b) Junior Counsel for the Respondent (10 minutes)
c) Senior Counsel for the Appellant (15 minutes)
d) Senior Counsel for the Respondent (15 minutes) - The Judge will score each mooter's performance during the moot according to the scoring criteria set out in the criteria listed under ‘Advice for Clerks and Judges’. The two mooters with the highest overall score will be declared the winners of the round, and will automatically proceed to the next round. In circumstances where a large number of moot teams have entered the competition, the sixteen moot teams with the highest aggregate scores in the first round will proceed to the second round of the competition, the scoring being conducted on a "knockout" basis thereafter.
- Where there are a large number of entrants for round one, those teams whose scores have not enabled them to progress to round two will be placed on a reserve list.
- Latter rounds of the competition will be Judged by practitioners from law firms and allied legal institutions. Suitable prizes will be awarded to the mooting finalists.
