SRC13: Dr Mario Mariniello: Market Distortions, Intellectual Property and Standards from an EU Perspective The Standardisation Research Centre SRC hosted a seminar with Dr Mario Mariniello on the role of standardisation as a business strategy and the way in which the European Union rules on competition becomes applicable to the actions of participating companies. Specifically looking at the role of the owner of the patented technology included in a standard. The seminar was held on 25 November 2013, 13-15, at the Rhenman Hall, the Institute of Economic Research, Scheelevägen 15A, Lund. About Dr Mario Mariniello Mario joined Bruegel from Ofcom where he worked as Senior Competition Economist. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Organization from the European University Institute of Fiesole (Florence) and a M.Sc. in Economics from CORIPE (Turin). From 2007 to 2012, Mario was a member of the Chief Economist Team at Dg-Competition, European Commission. He contributed to the economic analysis of major competition policy cases, to the development of economic expertise within the Directorate General and to the development of general policy instruments with an economic content. During the time he spent at the European Commission, he developed the economic analysis of a number of topical Antitrust and Merger cases such as Qualcomm, oneworld and Star alliances, ebooks, KLM/Martinair, Newscorp/BSkyB, UPM/Myllykoski. He also participated to the drafting of the new European Guidelines for the application of Art.101 TFEU to Horizontal Cooperation Agreements.
