Over the past decade, activists and policy-makers have increasingly recognized the links between menstruation and human rights. Thus, a myriad of rights, such as the rights to water, equity, dignity, education, health, and non-discrimination have been invoked to support the multifaceted challenges of people who menstruate. As menstrual rights and claims are flourishing, this roundtable asks what human rights bring to the conversation on menstruation, both at national and international levels, and examines the promises and perils of using human rights to support people who menstruate. It explores the extent to which human rights can help make menstruation visible, legitimize menstrual experiences, and provide legal mechanisms for redress in case of violation. Yet, it also recognizes that human rights are not a panacea. As such, human rights can inadvertently entrench menstrual stigma and fail to honor and acknowledge the diversity of menstrual experiences and practices across the globe by imposing some views about menstruation as universal. Therefore, the roundtable discusses how to avoid pitfalls of human rights-based approaches to menstruation, and highlights the centrality of the rights to agency and participation of people who menstruate in the elaboration of “menstrual rights.”
