My current research focuses on forms of child sexual abuse material as emerging phenomena within the tech crime nexus. Though highly politicised and currently subjected to criminalisation efforts in several countries, the hidden character of the use and the transnationalized forms of purchase and distribution of the material on the dark web poses challenges to both legal responses and criminological investigations. Through extensive digital ethnography on online child sexual abuse related forums on the dark web and online encrypted interviews with the individuals involved in the activities, the project investigates the experiential properties of the phenomena, the subcultural norms and practices that direct the activities, and the organisation of the activities which are essentially global yet potentially sanctioned by national jurisdictions. Through an in-depth empirical engagement, the project provides knowledge crucial to the development of preventive measures and legitimate legal responses to the phenomena in a Nordic and international context. The project contributes to both the qualification of legal frameworks and to the re-tooling of criminological theory for the investigation of emerging phenomena brought about by technological developments. The project will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Keith Hayward, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen and Associate Professor Jakob Demant, Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen.
Prior to myposition at the Faculty, Laura has worked at the Danish Crime Prevention Council and at University of Copenhagen and University of Aalborg as a researcher focusing on victimisation and perpetration of sex crimes. I hold a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from University of Copenhagen.
