This chapter explores whether and how international values and principles guide constitutional change. The rationale is that constitutional change does not happen in a vacuum. International values and principles that have been formed as part of the evolution of global constitutionalism may govern constitutional design and this can play an important role as regards comparative constitutional change. However, the Nordic constitutional and legal systems have also developed in several ways under the influence of European and international treaties and agreements. The rights protection in most of the Nordic constitutions has been strengthened in recent times and many of these constitutional amendments seem to be inspired by several international human rights treaties, especially the European Convention on Human Rights. Finally, international principles have impacted the Nordic constitutional systems as regards judicial review of the constitutionality of legislation.
