Polar Law and Private Governance

Global warming has drawn attention to the polar regions of the world which are becoming accessible in new ways. This also gives rise to numerous legal questions. The project will provide a contemporary overview of the legal orders of these increasingly important regions. An important part of the project concerns private governance systems in the Polar regions and their possible interplay with other legal orders. Private governance issues concern exploration and exploitation of natural resources and shipping activities in the polar regions. The project attempts to systematise Polar Law as the body of rules governing spaces, actors, and institutions surrounding the Arctic and the Antarctic.
