VELUX FOUNDATION funds new national sustainable initiative
A new national initiative, JURiB – Developing Competence in Law for Sustainability, unites Denmark’s legal research and educational environments with a shared mission: building a more sustainable society.
JURiB brings together six Danish universities—the University of Copenhagen, University of Southern Denmark, Aalborg University, Aarhus University, Roskilde University and Copenhagen Business School—in the first coordinated effort of its kind. The initiative aims to ensure that both current and future lawyers are prepared to address the growing legal complexities of the sustainability agenda, spanning environmental, societal and governance-related challenges.
While sustainability increasingly affects nearly every legal discipline, only a limited number of courses currently address it. JURiB seeks to close this gap by supporting capacity-building across education and research, ensuring that sustainability is integrated throughout bachelor’s and master’s programmes, as well as in continuing education.
JURiB has already launched three projects that combine education and research. Each project examines the legal implications of the sustainability agenda from three perspectives: sustainability and business, sustainability and the public sector, and sustainability at the global and EU level. The initiative will open multiple calls for new collaborative projects throughout its lifetime. The first call for proposals closes on 31 March 2026.
The initiative has been made possible through a DKK 25 million grant from the VELUX FOUNDATION, supporting the programme from 2025 to 2031.
Coordinated by the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen, the initiative is led by Professor Vibe Ulfbeck, who chairs the steering committee.
