Green transition and the Law of Shipping (GreenLaSH)

The project focuses on the regulatory initiatives at the international level (IMO) and EU level to reduce carbon emissions and analyses the consequences at industry level. The main focus is on contract and liability issues, relvant for various actors in the shipping industry, including shipowners, charterers, cargo owners and ports.

The project is a book project, based on an international conference organised by SHOC in November 2022. It analyses the implications of the IMO systems EEXI, CII, and the EU ETS system for shipping contracts and looks also at legal aspects of shipping carbon for storage. The project involves internal researchers, practitioners and external partners, from Norway, UK, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Singapore.

This subproject focuses on the possible implications for the shipping industry of climate change litigation. Suits have so far been directed against the oil industry (the Carbon Majors) but this projects asks whether maritime actors could also be targets of such suits.

GreenLaSH is supported by a panel of external industry representatives:

  • Henriette Invardsen, Danish Shipping
  • Peter Appel, Attorney, partner, Gorrissen Federspiel and head of the Danish Maritime Association
