Climate Arctic Governance (CArGo)

CArGo is a research network seeking to advance interdisciplinary research on Arctic governance to meet current climate and sustainability challenges.
CArGo’s subject areas and activities will focus on Arctic socio-economic systems and the different legal, political, geographical and cultural regimes at play. The network incorporates scholars from law, political science, geoscience and humanities to explore research synergies on this topic.

CArGo draws together researchers from different disciplines working on Arctic climate governance with the aim to explore research synergies in this area.

While CArGo’s founding partners represent law, political science, humanities and science, the network is open to all disciplines and researchers, and it is the goal of CArGo to incorporate more scholars over time to broaden views, approaches and funding opportunities.

The network brings together the following research environments:

  1. The Center for Climate Change Law and Governance (CLIMA), an international research center at the Faculty of Law that studies international law in the context of contemporary challenges, including climate change, sustainable development and the green transition.
  2. The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, which focuses on developing knowledge and understandings of cultural history and social relations in a world whose regions are at the same time both closely interlinked and far away from each other.
  3. The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the Faculty of Science, which provides scientific knowledge and education to help solve big societal challenges, such as climate change and increased pressure on natural resources. The department has a long tradition in Arctic research, including a scientific viewpoint of the physical geography and the impact of climate change in Arctic environments.
  4. The Centre for Military Studies at the Department of Political Science, which carries out work on the Arctic, Global Commons and Maritime Strategy.
