New visitor at iCourts - Chantal Mak
Chantal Mak is a professor of private law, in particular fundamental rights and private law, at the Amsterdam Centre for Transformative Private Law (ACT) of the University of Amsterdam. Her research focusses on the constitutional dimensions of private law, with particular interest for the influence of fundamental rights on judicial reasoning. She led a 5-year research project on ‘Judges in Utopia: Judicial law-making in European private law’ (subsidised by a Vidi grant of the Dutch Research Council, NWO) and participated in several European projects. Her work has been published in international journals including the Modern Law Review, Common Market Law Review, European Review of Private Law and European Review of Contract Law.
At iCourts, Chantal will work on the finalisation of a monograph resulting from the ‘Judges in Utopia’ project. The book presents a theoretical account of the capacity for judicial interaction among national civil courts and the Court of Justice of the EU and European Court of Human Rights to contribute to the development of a European political community. Case studies include housing, surrogacy and climate change.
