Breakfast Briefing with Ievgeniia Lukianchenko
Justice for victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence in Ukraine
Abstract:
In March 2022, the General Assembly deplored “in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine,” demanding an immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine. In the ensuing months, the security situation has deteriorated with massive loss of life and widespread destruction of infrastructure rapidly driving large-scale displacement. Within Ukraine, brutal violations of conflict-related sexual violence continue to be reported. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine was aware of over 100 acts of conflict-related sexual violence mostly attributed to Russian armed forces.
In May 2022, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, and the Government of Ukraine signed the Framework of Cooperation on the Prevention and Response to Conflict-Related Sexual Violence.
During the breakfast session the speaker will raise awareness of the strategic Government-United Nations partnership to address conflict-related sexual violence. The objective of the event is to draw attention of the international community to this issue and to lay a collaborative foundation for the development of a system that will ensure the rights of victims and bring perpetrators to justice and accountability.
