Project background

Below, you can read more about the background for the BASE survey, what the results will be used for, and where to access more information.

Background for the survey

Integration has been a salient political issue in Denmark for a number of years. During the past few years, the debate has intensified, and several political and legislative initiatives have been launched regarding integration. Today, immigrants account for about 10% of the Danish population.

While integration has become a more prominent issue on the political agenda, research on the topic has also increased. The research reveals, among other things, that many immigrants struggle to establish themselves on the Danish labour market and find permanent housing, and that they have poorer access to the healthcare system than the rest of the population. To date, however, not much research has been investigating what barriers to integration immigrants themselves experience facing in the aforementioned areas, or how immigrants assess the legislation. Furthermore, only little research has been done on what role private actors, e.g. companies and NGOs, play when pertaining to integration.

Examining immigrants’ own perspectives on the role of private actors and access to housing, health care and employment is essential in order to get a better understanding of how the legislation works in practice, and how integration can be further supported by legislators and private actors.

The results

You can find the results published from the BASE survey so far on this webpage. More research results will be added when they are published in order to make them accessible to participants, language centre managers and teachers as well as other interested parties.

The aim of the research is to inform legislators and others working with integration, with the hope of promoting integration and reducing barriers to employment, health care and housing for immigrants in Denmark.
