The role, responsibility and liability of private actors in the protection of biodiversity

Whereas the role of states in the preservation of biodiversity has for long been on the agenda, for instance through the Convention on Biological Diversity, this workshop focuses on the role, responsibility and liability of private actors in the protection of biodiversity.

It revolves around transnational supply chains which accelerate biodiversity loss abroad, with EU consumption being one important driver of global deforestation and unsustainable exploitation of marine resources. The workshop presents sector perspectives and voluntary initiatives on these aspects from a practical angle and three legal perspectives in analysing the  role of law and of private governance schemes on facilitating or frustrating global biodiversity protection. At EU level, the recently introduced Deforestation Regulation and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) are relevant in this regard, as they impose new obligations on private actors to exercise due diligence, also with regard to biodiversity.

The workshop is part of the Bio-trade project, which is network project funded by BiodivERsA and the Innovation Fund Denmark with partners from the Finnish Environment Insitute, the Raol Wallenberg Insitute, Sweden, and the University of Bern.
