FOCOFIMA - Forum for Company Law and Financial Market Law
Since 2003 research in Company Law and Financial Market Law is carried out by FOCOFIMA – Forum for Company Law and Financial Market Law. FOCOFIMA ceased to be an independent centre in 2013, but has since been continued under other centres and is today under the Centre for Commercial Law and Public Regulation (CEO), which was established in 2024.
Company Law covers the law of enterprises and collective bodies, e.g. companies, associations and foundations.
Financial Market Law covers the regulation of financial markets and securities trading, including the securities markets and the financial enterprises.
The Forum for Company Law and Financial Market Law (FOCOFIMA) was established in early 2003 as an informal collaboration between Prof. Jan Schans Christensen and Prof. Jesper Lau Hansen to provide a framework for their research into company law and financial market law respectively.
In connection with the reorganisation of the Faculty of Law in 2007, FOCOFIMA applied for approval as an independent research centre, which was granted with effect from 1 January 2008 for a period of five years.
FOCOFIMA subsequently continued as a section under the Centre for Business Law (CFE) from 2013 to 2016. The CFE ceased operations in 2016 and was replaced by the Centre for Market and Business Law (CME) in 2017, of which FOCOFIMA is a part.
Today, FOCOFIMA functions as an informal network for the faculty’s researchers who, to a greater or lesser extent, work on topics within company law and capital markets law.
The Business Group comprises private enterprises with an interest in supporting research and education within company law and financial market law.
The Business Group (Erhvervsgruppen) sponsors events and activities organised by FOCOFIMA and CCCL, e.g. conferences and guest lecturers. Each member pays a contribution for the calendar year and a member may withdraw from the Business Group at any time, although paid contributions are not refunded. The board academy was a collaboration between the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen and the law firm Plesner. It was the first of its kind to provide training for board members on the legal and practical aspects of board work. The academy operated for 10 years and ceased operations in 2017.
The University of Copenhagen is collaborating with CBS Board Education to offer a basic course for board members in financial companies.
Research based education
There is close interaction between research and education at the Faculty of Law, and researchers at FOCOFIMA teach and supervisor both bachelor and master degree students within the FOCOFIMA's research areas.
