Amnon Lev

Associate Professor

Amnon Lev’s work focuses on how authority is constructed on the basis of formal relationships of subjection. He is especially interested in the ways ideas and public law theorems are adapted to changing historical circumstances and used to justify public power. This is a question he has researched extensively, first as part of a study of the role of natural law in the emergence of the sovereign state, and subsequently in the context of studies of federalism and post-sovereign forms of political organisation.

His current research looks at the generation of precarity and interlocking forms of oppression in law based government.

Primary fields of research

Sovereignty, foundations of public law/public international law, political morality, hegemony, cultural materialism, intersectionality
