Two New Honorary Doctors at the Faculty of Law
At the University of Copenhagen’s traditional Annual Commemoration, the University's new honorary doctors are appointed. The Faculty of Law is delighted to nominate two new honorary doctors this year: Professor Dapo Akande (University of Oxford) and Professor Roberto Caranta (University of Turin). They are being honoured for research contributions that have had a significant impact in the fields of public international law and public procurement law, respectively.
Dapo Akande
Akande is a distinguished public international lawyer whose work spans many areas of the discipline, including the regulation of international organisations, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, cyber operations and international dispute settlement.
Professor Akande has advised governments and international organisations, including UN bodies, the African Union Commission, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Council of Europe and NATO, on a wide range of issues relating to international law. He has also served on several boards and advisory committees.
The nomination was submitted by Professor Astrid Kjeldgaard-Pedersen and Professor Mikael Rask Madsen:
“Strengthening the ties between the University of Copenhagen and Professor Akande will undoubtedly be of great benefit to academic staff, not only at the Faculty of Law, but also at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities, whose work touches upon issues relating to international law.”
Roberto Caranta
Caranta’s research focuses on public procurement law, sustainable public procurement and administrative law.
His research has been highly influential in advancing the understanding of how public procurement can be used as a strategic tool to promote societal objectives. With a bibliography comprising more than 200 scholarly publications, his work is widely cited internationally, including by Advocates General at the Court of Justice of the European Union. He is also frequently invited to deliver keynote addresses at international conferences in this field of law.
The nomination was submitted by Professor Vibe Garf Ulfbeck, Professor Ulla Neergaard, Associate Professor Beatriz Martinez Romera and Professor Carina Risvig Hamer:
“Professor Caranta is exceptionally well qualified to be appointed honorary doctor at the University of Copenhagen. His academic standing, combined with his many years of engagement with the Danish legal research community at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, makes him an exemplary candidate.”
Honorary lectures and Annual Commemoration

The two scholars will be celebrated at the University of Copenhagen Annual Commemoration on 13 November. The honorary doctorate is one of the University's highest academic distinctions.
