Current research prototypes provide haptic experiencesunthinkable with current commercial devices. As hapticfeedback is complex and multi-faceted a significantresearch effort has been put into developing elaboratefeedback devices. We believe that haptics must beconsidered as a coupled input/output system. Lookingat commercial VR / AR systems it appears as if thework on the output side has far outpaced the work onthe input side. We therefore argue that the next step inimproved haptic touch and communication systems liesnot in better output technologies, but in better inputand position tracking technologies. In this positionpaper we provide context to this claim, explain how ourbackgrounds put us in a uniquely suited position toexplore this topic further and present some discussionpoints which we wish to consider in our future work.
