Lunch seminar “Legal Science and Human Rights in the Israeli Constitutional Crisis”
CECS and WELMA invite you to an interdisciplinary seminar with law professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari on “Legal Science and Human Rights in the Israeli Constitutional Crisis”
In the last 8 months, Israel has been going through a major political and constitutional upheaval. The proposed so-called “legal reform” of Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government is seen by large sections of the public as no less than a plan to undermine democracy and create an authoritarian regime that will not be subject to effective checks and balances. In my lecture, I will discuss the implications of the government’s plan for women in Israeli society.
Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, Bar Ilan university, is a professor of law and an expert on family law and international women's rights. She has completed three terms on the UN Committee on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and twice served as the Vice-Chair. In 2018, she was named on Apolitical's 100 most influential people in gender policy around the world. Since the beginning of 2023 she is active in the protest movement against the Israeli government's judicial “reform” as a member of the Israeli Law Professors' Forum for Democracy
