Studying at the Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law has a long history as it was among the four original faculties at the founding of the University of Copenhagen in 1479. Today, the Faculty has about 4500 students and it is the largest of Denmark's four law schools. Approximately 250 international exchange students study at the faculty each year.

In 2017, students, lecturers and researchers were gathered for the first time in completely new buildings on South Campus. The campus areas bring together various lively academic environments from the faculties of Law, Humanities and Theology. The South Campus has constituted a huge upgrade in student facilities and with the move the Faculty of Law will gather teaching, study environment, research, administration and conference facilities under the same roof. South Campus is situated close to the metro station called ‘Islands Brygge’ which is only two stops away from the city centre of Copenhagen, see ‘how to find us’.

Currently, the Faculty of Law has about 135 full-time professors and associated professors,  about 60 PhD students and about 400 part-time external lecturers who teach both at bachelor and master level. The Faculty offers a strong international environment and is therefore able to attract academic staff from all over the world. Many of these have work and research experience from institutions like the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The external lecturers all have law degrees and work e.g. as lawyers, judges or heads of section in ministries.

As an exchange student you will get to experience quite a variety with regard to the way classes are conducted at graduate level. The latest study reform has put focus on the involvement of the students and therefore classes will include elements of group work and case-based education. The class size is max. 30 to 40 students per class.

Both Danish and international students follow the courses offered in English - you will therefore get to meet both Danes and students from all over the world in class. The English-taught courses are conducted at an advanced academic level.
