A recurring challenge in legal education is employing practice-oriented learning activities while at the same time promoting critical thinking and student-centered learning. The article describes how the Shadow Judgment Method can be used as learning activity in VAT law teaching. The Shadow Judgment Method is a legal research method used in the Feminist Judgments Project especially within the field of discrimination and equality law. The article concerns the evaluation of an inter-disciplinary collaboration regarding a case-exercise in the course “VAT Law in Relation to Activities in the EU” on the LLM program at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. Two positive results can be highlighted based on an evaluation of the students’ perception of the learning activity and an assessment of the students’ case-papers: The Shadow Judgment Method is particularly well suited to strengthen quality learning, and gives students insight into judicial thinking. The learning activity facilitates students’ development of legal communicative skills. Finally, the evaluation indicates that the learning activity could also benefit student learning in courses on other areas of the law.
