Conference on Maritime Management, Organization and Liability

Today’s shipping industry is organized in large, complex enterprises that operate globally. The efficient running of shipping companies requires professional management and organization, and whereas ownership and operation was formerly embedded in the same person (the shipowner), the management of today’s shipping company is often outsourced to one or more professional actors. In itself, this splitting up of management raises many questions concerning the distribution of risk and liability. In addition, the amount of regulation in the maritime area has increased exponentially over the years, together with a new tendency in certain national legal systems to introduce legislation with extraterritorial effect. All these changes make for increased vulnerability, particularly for shipping enterprises.

Currently, digitalization in general and other technological advances, such as blockchain and autonomous ships, are expected to have a major impact on the industry. This may change how the industry is organized, how document and data flows are managed, and impact core questions affecting the distribution of risk and liability.

Finally, increased awareness surrounding the possibilities of the shipping industry to find sustainable business models may give rise to questions about the extent to which management in shipping companies can and must include such considerations.

During this 1½-day-conference, speakers will analyse important legal issues arising out of these developments. Day one will be devoted to the theme “Management and organization of shipping enterprises – international aspects” while the theme for day two (half day) will concern “Tech developments and their impact on liability”. Speakers are renowned academics in maritime law and include professors Stephen Girvin, Frank Smeele, and Vibe Ulfbeck together with other leading academics and researchers working on these cutting-edge issues.
