Godzimirska & Creamer receive grant to continue cooperation on the ECtHR

Zuzanna Godzimirska and Cosette Creamer (University of Minnesota/University of Pennsylvania) receive 32.468 USD (approx. 212.000 DKK) from Grant-in-Aid from the University of Minnesota to continue research on the trust-building role of the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The grant is effective 1 January 2019 through 30 June 2020.

In contrast to existing research on trust in the ECtHR, which tends to focus on the role of judges and their rulings, the project turns the limelight to the legal bureaucrats working at the Registry of the Court. Arguing that these civil servants serve a critical function for the court’s operation and have the potential to play an indispensable trust-building role, the project will draw on interviews with judges and legal bureaucrats at the ECtHR and new survey data from government representatives, applicant lawyers to the Court, NGO representatives involved in proceedings, and the broader public to examine which Registry practices affect trust in the institution. The surveys will be fielded in four members of the Council of Europe: Denmark, Poland, Spain and Turkey.
