The construction on Karen Blixen Square has begun

The construction work has started and for safety reasons there are fences from the canal alongside building 16 (by the Faculty of Humanities) to the entrance to building 9 (at the Faculty of Law) which is enclosed by a fence and cordoned off. It will therefore not be possible to use the Faculty of Law east entrance by the construction site. See the map at the below to get an overview over the closed area, you can click on it to see a bigger picture. The first part of the construction is in the ground where, among other things, will there be established sewers, district heating pipes and electrical installations for the lightning on the square.

In the autumn 2017, the concrete casting for the first of three large bicycle hills starts, the outer diameter is 36 m and 29 m inside. Under the hills, will there be room for bicycle parking for approx. 1.500 bicycles. Beside the hills, there will be established further room for 600-bicycle parking around the square - they will not be covered. On top of the hills, can students, staff and visitors can take a break and enjoy the view of the square. The temporary parking of bicycles, which has previously been on the square has been moved over to the grass area between the Rambla and Njalsgade.

The construction will take the students and staff into consideration: it will take extra consideration in periods, for example by limiting noise during exams periods. Naturally, it is difficult to prevent nuisance during such large construction work, but there will be focus on reducing and averting the inconveniences as much as possible until the construction is finished at the end of 2018.

During the construction, there will still be access to the library.

The budget for Karen Blixen Square is approx. DKK 80 million: The University of Copenhagen has received a donation from the A.P. Møller foundation of DKK 65 million for co-financing of the project. EKJ Advisory Engineers are senior advisors on the project. COBE is the architect, and CN3 Advisory Engineers are secondary advisors.
