About the speaker
Prof. Dr. Hong Zhao is currently the Chairperson and Member of Appellate Body of World Trade Organization.
Mme Zhao received her Degrees of Bachelor, Masters and Ph. D in Law from the Law School of Peking University in China. She is currently a guest Professor at several universities including the Universities of Peking, Fudan and International Business and Economics. Previously she served as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, Deputy Director General of Anti-Monopoly Bureau of Ministry of Commerce, Assistant Trade Representative at Office of International Trade Negotiation of Ministry of Commerce. She also served as Minister Counsellor in charge of legal affairs at China's mission to the WTO, during which time she served as Chair of the WTO's Committee on Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs). Mme Zhao then served as Commissioner for Trade Negotiations at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce's Department for WTO Affairs.
Domestically, Mme Zhao helped formulate many important Chinese legislative acts on economic and trade areas adopted since the 1990s and has experience in China's judiciary system, serving as Juror at the Economic Tribunal of the Second Intermediate Court of Beijing between 1999 and 2004. She is also a Council Member of Shenzhen International Arbitration Court and an arbitrator at China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC). She has taught and supervised law students on international economic Law, WTO law and intellectual property rights (IPR) at various universities in China. She has been invited to be a key-note speaker or to give a lecture on International Law or WTO Law at Munich Security Conference, University of London, World Trade Institute at University of Bern, University of Barcelona, Oxford Brooks University in London, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva etc.
