Lunch Seminar with Emilia Justyna Powell

Adjudication and Arbitration: States' Choices of Binding Forums

Abstract:
International courts and arbitration panels are used relatively infrequently by states involved in territorial disputes. This presentation will give an overview of my book project (Peaceful Resolution of Territorial Disputes, co-authored with Krista E. Wiegand).

The book explores reasons standing behind states' choices of a variety of alternative conflict management forums in the context of territorial disputes.

I will talk about three mechanisms: states' past experience with conflict management venues (win/loss record), domestic legal systems (civil, common, Islamic), and strategic considerations.

Registration: For participation in the event, please use this registration form no later than 3 May, 11:00.

You are welcome to bring your own lunch bag.
