The film company Palladium was highly successful throughout the 1920s, an exception in an otherwise troubled period for the Danish film industry. Films featuring Fyrtårnet and Bivognen — a pairing not unlike Laurel and Hardy — drew big audiences around the world. This was not least the case in Germany, where the two stars were renamed Pat and Patachon and became an integral part of the cinema repertoire and film culture until the mid-1930s. This article maps the connections between Palladium, the British film agent Arthur G. Gregory, and the German producer and distributor Lothar Stark – especially in relation to the German market. How influential were Stark and Gregory in establishing and maintaining the success of Palladium and the popularity of Pat and Patachon?
