Byernes opståen under 1100- og 1200tallet er et resultat af en lang udvikling som i Nordeuropa allerede har begyndt under 900tallet. Bidraget prøver at sætter idéen af an lange linje mod gamle opfattelser af en dominant tysk indflydelse på byudviklingen. Samtidig giver bidraget en ny definition af by-begrebet som sådan.
