Although the Dead Sea Scrolls were likely owned by a community living at Qumran, many texts were authored elsewhere. The article investigates the surprisingly limited distribution of distinctively "sectarian" terminology in the scrolls, and concludes that the majority of texts belonged to a heritage shared with other branches of Judaism around the turn of the Era, which (although indirectly) was also the background to nascent Christianity.
