Dialectical theology has been very influential in Denmark in most of the 20th century. However, the latest decades have seen an empirical turn in both theology and church challenging the dominance of the dialectical theology.
This paper focuses on factors behind the late introduction of empirical research by practical theologians in Denmark. Among the factors Danish dialectical theology and its anti-idealistic position is seen as the most important one. The most influential movement in Danish theology in the 20th century has been the “Tidehverv” movement. The paper therefore focuses on the position of the “Tidehverv” movement in relation to empirically based practical theology.
It is the hypothesis of the paper that the resistance against empirically based practical theology in the Danish folkekirke and its predominant dialectical theological stance has been due to both the scientific approach of the practical theology and the underlying liberal theology of the empirically based practical theology.
