The project investigates how fishing in marine protected areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) might be affected through regime interactions by the 2023 agreement on conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (the BBNJ treaty). The project will map legal pathways for regulating fishing in ABNJ and ocean/fishing/biodiversity governance regime interactions, analyzing:
- where and how the BBNJ treaty might affect these regime interactions, and
- how the BBNJ might act as a unifying institution enforcing cooperative or synergistic fragmentation.
This will partly be investigated through a case study of marine protected areas in North-east Atlantic ABNJ.
