Climate Change and Ocean Governance: Understanding International and Regional Ocean Regimes through the Lens of Climate Change (NeOGov)
NeOGov is a research network that explores international and regional ocean regimes through the lense of climate change.
There is a pressing need to examine how UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the emerging regime for conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas for areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), as well as ocean uses (fishing, aquaculture, energy or shipping) are confronted to evolve in light of the Paris Climate Agreement, and in light of the evolving science on how climate change will affect the world's oceans. Further, understanding and exploring how these challenges affect governance of the Arctic Ocean is of special relevance for the Nordic Region, and warrants a coordinated research approach in the Nordic region.
NeOGov will address the need to better understand these governance challenges and the potential research agendas emerging from them. This will be done by bringing together a collaboration of Nordic universities and researchers with expertise in the three key areas at play, namely, climate change governance, ocean governance and Arctic governance, to create research synergies, produce a valuable network of scholars and deliver cutting-edge research.
Workshop 1: “Climate Change and Ocean Governance: Exploring International Ocean Regimes through the Lens of Climate Change” (two-day workshop in Copenhagen, August 2022).
Workshop 2: "Climate Change and the Arctic Ocean: Towards a New Research Agenda" (two-day workshop in Lapland, August 2023).
