New researcher at CLIMA - Bastiaan Klerk

His research focuses on the law of the sea and international environmental law, with particular interests in dynamic marine spatial management and conservation, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, the ocean–climate nexus, and climate change litigation. He has published widely on these and related topics.

At CLIMA, Bastiaan is part of the project Pollution at Sea: Vessel Impacts and Regime Interaction in Ocean, Climate and Biodiversity Law (SeaPact). SeaPact examines how international law can better address pollution from vessels and protect the marine environment and its biodiversity. Focusing on pollution from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) and vessel-based marine litter, the project investigates how different legal regimes interact and how greater regulatory coherence can improve environmental outcomes.

Prior to joining CLIMA, Bastiaan completed his PhD in the law of the sea at the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea (NCLOS), UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. His doctoral research examined how the law of the sea can better respond to dynamic and changing marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on area-based management tools. Alongside his research at CLIMA, Bastiaan contributes to teaching at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen.
