New researcher at CLIMA - Meng Zhang
CLIMA is thrilled to share that as of August 1, 2024, Dr. Meng Zhang has joined the Centre for Climate Change Law and Governance (CLIMA) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. Meng works on the project “Regulatory Innovation to Incentivize Green Hydrogen (RIGHydro)” in collaboration with Assoc Prof. Beatriz Martinez Romera at CLIMA. RIGHydro, funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark, aims to contribute to the deployment of green hydrogen as a key component of the green transition in Denmark, the EU and beyond. Through a comprehensive understanding and analysis of the latest regulatory developments, the project will point out how to enable, from a legal and institutional perspective, the deployment of green hydrogen.
In general, Meng’s research domain embraces international environmental law, EU environmental, energy and climate law, Chinese environmental and climate law/policy, and comparative environmental and climate law. He obtained his PhD degree (Doctor in Law) at Ghent University (Belgium, 2021) with the thesis titled “Governance of Climate Technologies: The Role of International Environmental Law in Regulating and Facilitating Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)”. Before joining CLIMA, Meng worked as a postdoc fellow at the Department of Business Law in Lund University (Sweden), focusing on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
In addition to his full-time postdoc position at CLIMA, Meng also serves as an affiliated researcher for human rights and climate change at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (Sweden); an adjunct researcher for EU climate law at the Department of Business Law in Lund University; and a guest lecturer for the EU Jean Monnet Module (EUIndoPac): the EU and the Indo-Pacific region (UCLouvain, Belgium).
Moreover, Meng also has extensive networks on environmental and climate governance in the EU and beyond. He collaborates closely with the EU Forum of Judges for the Environment (EUFJE). Meng is also invited as a National Rapporteur in the Climate Litigation Initiative (C2LI) led by the Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance (UK) as well as a guest researcher at the Research Institute of Environmental Law (National Centre of Excellence) in Wuhan University. Recently, Meng’s monograph “Carbon Emissions Trading in China: Law, Policy and Mechanisms” has been published by Edward Elgar in its ‘Elgar Studies in Climate Law’ series.
“This journey with RIGHydro marks an exciting new chapter,” says Meng who looks forward to further academic adventures at CLIMA, contributing to its mission towards a low-carbon world that we can eventually be proud of.
