Catherine Hall

Catherine Hall is a PhD candidate at the Center for Climate Change, Energy & Environmental Law (CCEEL) at the University of Eastern Finland. Prior to joining CCEEL, Catherine graduated with a Master’s degree in Global Environmental Law and Governance from the University of Strathclyde. During and after her time at Strathclyde, Catherine also contributed as a researcher to several projects for the Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law & Governance (SCELG). 
Catherine’s PhD research explores the concept and role of minilateral climate clubs within global climate governance through the theoretical lens of informal international lawmaking. The current focus of her PhD concerns the wider role of equity within climate clubs and more specifically, how future climate clubs can be designed to embed the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities into their design structure.
Catherine also has a keen a research interest in, and experience of, climate litigation. This includes her previous role as a Senior Research Assistant at the Climate Change Litigation Initiative (C2LI) and her contribution as a Research Assistant to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Environmental Law’s Climate Change Litigation Project.
In addition, Catherine has also worked as an Associate for the Earth Law Center to help further the Rights of Nature. During this legal consultancy, Catherine provided legal expertise and assistance for the ‘Balkan Rivers case’ to help obtain rights for rivers in Serbia and safeguard their unique biodiversity and ecosystems.
