Course on Carbon Capture and Storage

The Faculty of Law offers a 3-hour course on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for professionals. The course is divided into two parts. First, an introduction to CCS technologies, its current state of deployment and the relevant EU legal framework is provided. Second, an evaluation of the law and policies adopted in various jurisdictions, including Denmark, will be given by four international experts.

CCS entails capturing carbon dioxide at large emission sources, transporting it to suitable geological formations and injecting it into those formations. It is widely considered to be a key technology, while society decarbonizes its energy and manufacturing sectors. CCS has a role to play in bridging the greenhouse gas emissions gap to reach the Paris Agreement temperature goals (limiting global temperature increase to well below 2°C, aiming to limit the increase to 1.5°C). However, the deployment of CCS is still slow, for reasons of economic, political as well as legal nature. Nonetheless, several countries have made plans to deploy CCS. Denmark, for instance, has set forth a goal to cut 0.9 million tonnes of CO2 through CCS by 2030.
