Lunch Seminar with Barbara Torres Garcia
Title: New rights for new times: the right to work less
About the seminar
The purpose of this research is to study in current legislation the possibility of reducing working hours without a corresponding loss of pay. Certainly, this matter is a historical question, but the last major structural changes in the labour market once again highlighted it. Globalization and the digitalization of the production process (resulting from the use of innovate technologies, some of them based on algorithms and artificial intelligence) may have contributed to increased productivity and business profits, but without any direct benefits for employees. In this context, working time reduction may emerge as a measure of economic and social justice, redistributing growth profits, addressing unemployment (through job sharing), tackling climate change (by the reduction of carbon footprint), and encouraging employee well-being.
