On thin ice: A gendered study of human rights in relation to climate change in the Arctic

About the seminar
Climate change increases the likelihood of human rights violations, exacerbating existing inequalities. The Arctic stands at the forefront of climate change, warming faster than the rest of the globe. Despite scholars having studied human rights issues related to climate change in the Arctic, there exists a gap in understanding women’s rights. The presented research proposal adopts a human rights-based approach to climate change, combining a doctrinal analysis of international human rights law with empirical research through legal anthropology. The aim is to explore how climate change influences human rights in the Arctic, using Greenland as case study. The primarily focus is on women’s right, narrowing in on safety, health, and resources, as gender studies and international case law indicates these areas to be particularly vulnerability to human rights violations. The results will contribute a nuanced perspective to our understanding of impacts of climate change on human rights. The study aims to shed light on critical issues and pave the way for more inclusive and informed approached to climate change and human rights.
