NEEDS 2022: Global Disasters
Disasters research is ever more salient today. Weather related incidents fueled by climate change have filled the news for years while the Covid-19 pandemic has overshadowed everything else during the past year and a half. The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report highlights the need for immediate global attention and that radical societal transformation is required in the coming years to limit dangerous climate change. Global disasters, both present and future, have become part of common understanding and the public debate. What is the best response to the contagion of a novel virus? How can the next pandemic be avoided? Is it feasible to halt global warming? And how can we become resilient to more extreme weather events? These are all questions that are fundament to academic disaster studies, but can now be read in the newspapers or heard on the news almost on a daily basis. These questions can only be answered with an inter-disciplinary lens.
The overall theme for the conference will be Global Disasters with a focus on Health and Climate Change and disaster risk reduction and its intersections with development. All these topics have a global and a local perspective, so research proposals revolving around international aspects as well as local are welcome.

Emily Boyd is Director of Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies and Professor in Sustainability Science. She is a leading social scientist with a background in international development, environment and climate change, with focus on the interdisciplinary nexus of poverty, livelihoods and resilience in relation to global environmental change. Emily Boyd is currently leading work on undesirable resilience, politics of loss and damage and intersectionality in societal transitions, including on transformations under climate change. JC Gaillard is Ahorangi / Professor of Geography at Waipapa Taumata Rau / The University of Auckland. His work focuses on power and inclusion in disaster and disaster studies. It includes developing participatory tools for engaging minority groups in disaster risk reduction with an emphasis on ethnic and gender minorities, prisoners, children and homeless people. Friederike (Fredi) Otto is a Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, Imperial College London. Fredi is a physicist with a doctorate in philosophy of science from the Free University Berlin. Her main research interests include extreme weather events such as droughts, heat waves and storms, and understanding whether and to what extent these are made more likely or intense due to climate change - known by experts as 'climate change attribution'. Tasneem Siddiqui is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Dhaka and the founding Chair of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) the premier migration think tank of Bangladesh. Her work focuses on climate change adaptation and migration, disaster induced migration, drivers and impact of internal and international male and female labour migration, migration governance, diaspora, remittances, and safe and sustainable cities inclusive to migrants. The NEEDS conference aims to explore the status quo of disaster research and management. The conference wishes to harness its broad, interdisciplinary expertise by gathering disaster researchers from academic institutions and practitioners from the disaster management community (European and beyond) to build networks and to discuss the most pressing issues in disaster research across the academic and practical disciplines.
The first NEEDS conference in 2015 and the second one in 2017 were organized by members of The Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research (COPE) at the University of Copenhagen. These conferences brought some of the top scholars in the field of disaster studies to Copenhagen. These events were surely landmark events as they helped us to put the Danish and Nordic disaster research scenes on the global map. Since then, the conference has been to Amsterdam (2018) and Sweden twice (2019 and 2021). Ever since the inception, the idea behind the conference has been to bring together internationally renowned experts in the field and the broader community of disaster researchers in Northern Europe. However, it has grown to be known globally and attracts eminent researchers from all across the world and from different disciplines. Furthermore, it has provided an opportunity to create a link between practitioners and academics.

The Conference will take place 1-3 November 2022 at the Faculty of Law, located at University of Copenhagen’s Southern Campus.
Fee:
The participation fee for this years conference will be 170EUR Inclusive VAT for everyone. You will pay the fee when the registration opens up 15 August - you will find the link here on this webpage.
