Lunch Seminar Series: Standing in Global Climate Litigation: Learning from Best Practices
The Centre for International Law and Governance (CILG), Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen is hosting a lunch seminar on the 13th of June 2022. At the seminar, Professor Randall Abate (Monmouth University) will present his research on ‘Standing in Global Climate Litigation: Learning from Best Practices’.
Within the past two decades, climate litigation has secured inspiring victories and suffered devastating defeats in domestic and international courts and tribunals around the world. Standing has been a major obstacle in climate litigation in some jurisdictions around the world, but not in others. This presentation first surveys case studies in select countries to examine how and why standing has been an obstacle in climate litigation, particularly in the U.S. It then identifies best practices in standing in climate litigation from other countries to help diminish the standing barriers in countries where such challenges exist.
