Climate Breakfast Seminar Series: Potential Climate Litigation in the Law of the Sea With Associate Professor Zhen Sun

Climate Breakfast series

The Centre for International Law and Governance (CILG), the Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research (COPE) of the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, and the student organisations Casus Clima and International Law Student Association (ILSA) – Copenhagen are happy to announce the 15th Climate Breakfast Seminar with Zhen Sun, Associate Professor, World Maritime University.

The relationship between the law of the sea and climate change is not clear-cut despite its obvious importance. To better address the multifaceted issues of climate change related impacts on the oceans, it is worth exploring the opportunities for States to utilise the dispute settlement procedures under UNCLOS to resolve or advise their potential disputes with one another. This seminar discusses the potential litigation process that could be used by relevant States to address legal disputes or issues relating to climate change related impacts on the oceans.

Zhen Sun is Associate Professor (Research/OSGM) at the World Maritime University. She teaches and researches in public international law, law of the sea, regulation of international shipping and the protection of the marine environment. Currently, Zhen serves as Co-Principal Investigator for both the Land-to-Ocean Leadership Programme and the Empowering Women for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development Programme.

This seminar is based on an article co-authored with the late Dr. Meinhard Doelle, Professor of Law at Dalhousie University.

The Climate Breakfast Seminar Series was launched in June 2019 as a platform to provide expert insights on crucial contemporary climate change issues.
