Matthijs Maas, a PhD Fellow at the Centre for International Law and Governance (CILG), and member of the AI-LeD research group, has co-authored a joint submission to the European Commission’s ‘White Paper on Artificial Intelligence: a European Approach to Excellence and Trust’, which was published and opened for public consultation on February 19th 2020.

The joint response paper, which Maas co-authored with scholars from the Centre for the Future of Intelligence (University of Cambridge) and the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, provides detailed commentary on the EC White Paper. Specifically, the response makes 29 specific and actionable recommendations, such as "consider adding record-keeping of the computational resources (or ‘compute’) used to build, test and validate the AI systems.", and "Do not consider a ‘grandfather clause’”.
