Visiting researcher to CECS: Ruby Moynihan Magsig
Dr Ruby Moynihan Magsig will be a visitor at CECS from 26 August to 2 September. Dr Magsig is a Senior Researcher at the Faculty of Law, Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington, and Senior International Advisor to the New Zealand Government Department of Conservation, where she leads New Zealand's delegation to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and is New Zealand's lead for the International Union for Conservation of Nature. She has also contributed legal advice to the FAO, UNESCO, the UN Economic Commission for Europe, WWF and GIZ.
Her research examines how international and comparative law evolves to address complex environmental challenges, focusing on oceans, freshwater, biodiversity, rights of nature and Indigenous approaches to the environment. She holds a Royal Society Te Apārangi of New Zealand Marsden Fund award for the project Reimagining ocean law to achieve equitable and sustainable use of marine ecosystems, which investigates how international ocean law can be transformed by drawing on progressive concepts from international environmental and human rights law, including Indigenous perspectives and rights of nature.
Now in the project's final phase, she will present her research findings during at a lunch seminar to be held 31 August 2026.
