Online application

The Faculty of Law only accepts PhD applications that have been submitted using our online application system. There is no application fee. Applications must be submitted in either Danish or English.
All applications must be submitted by the closing date. Late applications will not be accepted. If your application does not include all the required supporting documents, it will be rejected and will not be considered by the assessment committee.

We encourage applicants to familiarise themselves with the online application form and take time to read the questions on the application form before beginning to upload documents.

Click ‘apply online’ to be taken to the online application form. The online application form is only available when there is an open PhD call.

We advise you to have the following documents ready before you begin your online application:

  • Certified copies of original diploma(s) and transcripts (both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree) in the original language and an authorised English translation if they are issued in a language other than English or Danish.

  • The name of a member of academic staff (associate professor or professor) whom you wish to have assigned as your supervisor. The supervisor is selected on the background of your application and research project.. It is not a requirement that you have contacted a potential supervisor on beforehand. However, if you wish to do so, please note that some members of the academic staff have a very long response time, and you are not guaranteed an answer from them before an actual interview for the position.
  • Letter of motivation that explains the choice of the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen as a host institution for the proposed project and outlines how the project fits within the research priorities at the faculty (maximum 1 page). A summarised version of this should also be included in the section titled ‘Reasons for applying/motivation’ on the online application form (maximum 1000 characters).
  • If applicable, proof of English language proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL test scores). For more information on English language proficiency requirements see ‘language requirements’.

Please note:

  • It is only possible to upload once per field. Therefore, you must merge bachelor’s and master’s degree diplomas and transcripts into one file.
  • There is a maximum file size of 5MB per upload. Exceptions cannot be made. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the file is under the prescribed file size. Regrettably, PhD Administration is unable to assist applicants with file transformation requests.
  • Only PDF files are accepted. Other files such as ZIP, WORD, JPEG etc. are not accepted and will result in the dismissal of your application.
  • If you have problems submitting your application, make sure you have filled in all mandatory (*) fields and questions as well as having observed the space limits.
  • It is not possible to alter information or upload extra material once you have submitted your online application. Please check your application using the link in the confirmation email sent to you after you have successfully uploaded your application.

If you need to make changes to a submitted application:

Before the application deadline: Contact PhD Administration (phd@hrsc.ku.dk) requesting them to delete your application. After your application has been deleted, upload a new application.

After the application deadline: Applications cannot be altered. Extra or revised material cannot be uploaded and taken into account.
If at the time of application, the applicant had not yet received their final diploma or grade transcript from their university, they may submit such final Bachelor’s and Master’s degree diplomas and transcripts by the deadline provided in the call. Such diplomas and transcripts must be sent to phd@hrsc.ku.dk.
