Housing
Application
The International Office provides housing for international students participating in the Copenhagen Master of Excellence (COME) programmes at the University of Copenhagen. If you would like our assistance in finding accommodation in Copenhagen, you must apply by returning a completed application form to int-housing@adm.ku.dk.
Download the Housing Application Form
Applications are processed as they are received, and application for accommodation will be closed when we have received as many applications as we have available rooms. As a COME student you may be required to apply before your admission is final. We expect the housing window to close approximately primo May/June for our autumn semester and medio November for our spring semester. These are not fixed but variable dates depending on the number of applications we receive. You must therefore not regard the housing window as a fixed date/deadline but only as a guideline.
Faculty of Life Sciences Students
If you a student at the Faculty of Life Science, the application process is different. Please refer to the Faculty of Life Sciences housing information webiste.
Nordic Students
Students from Nordic countries (excluding LIFE) must refer to the International Office' website with information about Housing for Nordic Students.
Housing Offer
If you are admitted to the University and your housing application has been accepted, we will send a housing offer to the e-mail adress stated in your application or to your University of Copenhagen e-mail if such an e-mail has been awarded to you at that point. Therefore, it very important that you check both e-mails regularly.
Due to the large number of applicants and the difficult housing situation in Copenhagen, you may receive a housing offer from us as late as two weeks before the beginning of your studies. If you have not heard from us two weeks prior to your arrival, please feel free to contact the Housing Coordinators at: int-housing@adm.ku.dk.
We are only able to provide one housing offer per student applying within the housing window. If you choose to decline your housing offer or you do not respond to the housing offer within the deadline stated in the offer, you take on the responsibility of finding housing on your own. If you go travelling or otherwise unable to check your e-mail on a regular basis, it is your responsibility to get someone (for instance a family member) to check it on your behalf. As finding housing is quite difficult in Copenhagen – especially from abroad – we advise you to accept the offer from The International Office.
Housing Period
All housing applicants will be offered housing according to their period of study, which is including or excluding the pre-semester language courses. The housing offer will cover the first year of your studies at the University of Copenhagen. For your second year, please refer to our information about Finding Housing on your Own.
As a general rule, the period of study that you have applied for is binding. If your period of study varies from the standard admission dates 1 August and 1 September in the fall and 1 January and 1 February, you are required to contact the housing office to inform us of this. The housing department is not informed automatically. You are not guaranteed a housing offer in a period which differs from the standard admission dates. The Housing Coordinators must be informed of any changes to you study period before you receive your housing offer.
What Type of Housing do we Offer?
The University of Copenhagen does not have on-campus accommodation. Instead we have access to a limited number of rooms in halls of residence (kollegier) in various parts of Copenhagen.
When you apply, you must list all the various options in our rooms in kollegium/shared student apartments in your preferred order in your application. Please see the details of the various options using the links at the bottom of this page.
If you are offered a room in a hall of residence, you should be prepared that payment for most halls of residences is paid in one payment per semester.
All rooms assigned by the International Office are furnished with access to kitchen, toilet and bathing facilities. The rooms offered in halls of residence or in shared student apartments are a combination of single rooms and twin rooms. Twin rooms are shared with another student of the same gender and preferably the same age.
Direct Houisng List
In addition to our service of rooms in kollegium/shared student apartments, private landladies/landlords who contact the office and want to offer a room to an international student can have their offer placed on our direct housing list. The International Office cannot guarantee that you will find an offer via the direct housing list. Any agreements with private landladies/landlords are made directly between the student and the landlady/landlord. The International Office is not involved in any way other than placing the offers on the list. If you do not want a specific offer in one of our rooms in kollegium/shared student apartments but just want access to the direct housing list, please state this in your application form.
Rental Conditions
Offers are non-terminable, time-limited housing offers which means that a tenant cannot shorten his/her contract without finding another international student to take over the contract. This goes for all offers except Tranehavegård shared apartments in which the entire apartment can be given three month’s notice to the first of a month. This requires that both tenants agree on giving notice.
To have the halls of residences accept international students on short stays, the International Office must guarantee that rent is paid throughout the year. It is illegal for a university in Denmark to cover rent for students. Therefore, a student cannot move out in the middle of the semester and leave the rest of the rent that semester to be paid by the University.
You cannot opt out of the general terms and still live in one of rooms facilitated by the International Office.
Cancellation
Before the first rental day and move-in, you have the right to withdraw your acceptance of your residential tenancy agreement up to 14 days after the date the housing offer has been sent to you and has been received in your university inbox (in accordance with the Danish Act on Certain Consumer Contracts). This is called the cooling-off period. Please note that you have to contact the International Office and confirm the withdrawal of your acceptance and get an e-mail confirmation of the withdrawal. If you withdraw close to the very end of the cooling off period, you should call the International Office as well as e-mail to ensure that your withdrawal is received.
If you withdraw your acceptance after termination of the cooling-off period, you will be charged the deposit. This procedure also applies if you have to cancel your entire stay in Denmark prior to the first day of the rental period. It is not dependent on whether or not you have paid the rent and deposit due. Having failed to uphold the payment conditions of the contract does not exempt you from paying the deposit.
If you do not cancel your stay in Denmark but still want to withdraw after the first rental day, it will be necessary to find an international student at the University of Copenhagen to take over your rental contract before it can be terminated regardless of whether or not you have moved in. Until then, you will be required to pay the rent and deposit.
Arrival
You can gain access to the room at 12 o’clock noon on the first working day of your rental contract, and you must be out of the room prior to 12 o’clock noon on the last day of your rental contract. It is strictly prohibited to try to force access prior to the first day of your contract date. You must take the first date of your contract date into account when planning your arrival. If you want to come to Denmark prior to the first day of your contract, you may wish to book a hostel.
