New visitor at iCourts - Freek van der Vet

Dr. Freek van der Vet is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Liu Institute for Global Issues, University of British Columbia, Canada. Earlier he worked at the Aleksanteri Institute for Russian and East European Studies, at the University of Helsinki. His PhD (sociology, University of Helsinki) examined the strategic litigation of Russian NGOs at the European Court of Human Rights.

Drawing from interviews and reports, his current project examines how Russian human rights lawyers mobilize the law when the Russian authorities increasingly use laws and surveillance as tools of repression. In particular, the project looks at how lawyers protect NGOs from curtailing legislation, people accused of high treason, and victims of telephone tapping. In addition, Freek works on a book on litigation at the European Court on Human Rights on behalf of victims of the violent conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia, and Eastern Ukraine.

His research interests include international litigation before regional human rights courts, legal mobilization, and the protection of human rights lawyers in dangerous environments. His academic work appeared in The International Journal of Human Rights, Social & Legal Studies, Human Rights Review, Review of Central and East European Law, and Europe-Asia Studies (forthcoming).
