Mikkel Jarle Christensen has new paper accepted in Journal of Historical Sociology

Mikkel Jarle Christensen The article investigates the diffusion of police models in the 19th century with a focus on the Danish import of the Metropolitan Police implemented in London in 1829. Building on the sociological framework of Pierre Bourdieu, the analysis demonstrates how an international police model was crafted as a result of its social and political value in specific national contexts. Inspired by the police in London but transforming its symbolic and organizational characteristics to fit local power balances, Danish elites imported a very specific form of policing that corresponded to dominant political perspectives. The adaptation of the English role model was closely related to a transformation of the national field of power as absolutism was formally disbanded but practically folded into a new constitutional monarchy in which conservative and liberal elites coexisted.
