ICON-S 2017 Conference ”Courts, Power, Public Law” a Massive Success

The local host iCourts, the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre of Excellence for International Courts, and The Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, opened their new building at South Campus, Copenhagen for three days of presentations and discussion on issues related to the conference theme of ”Courts, Power, Public Law”.

The conference began at the Radisson Blu Scandinavia on 5 July 2017 where Centre Director, Professor Mikael Madsen, iCourts, local host of the ICON-S 2017 Conference, and Professor Gráinne de Búrca, New York University, Co-President of ICON-S, gave the opening remarks and welcomed everyone to the by far largest ICON S conference.

An inspirational keynote address

Professor Bryan Stevenson, the Equal Justice Initiative, New York University, delivered a moving and inspirational keynote address on racial injustice and received a standing ovation from the 700+ participants at the opening.

Opening reception

Following the opening at Radisson Blu Scandinavia, Dean Jacob Graff Nielsen, the Faculty of Law, welcomed ICON-S to the Law Faculty at the South Campus with a cocktail reception in the early evening. Participants enjoyed drinks and the sunny weather in the Atrium and the adjacent courtyards.

Parallel Panels Sessions

A record 199 panel sessions took place in six rounds of 30 – 35 parallel panels. The panels were supported by more than 30 volunteers and student assistants, who made sure that IT-assistance etc. was available to panelists and that the event generally ran smoothly. 

Plenary Sessions with high profile speakers

Three plenary sessions took place during the conference:

  • Plenary Session I: Global Economic Justice with Professor Bhupinder Chimni, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Professor Katharina Pistor, Columbia Law School, Professor Joseph H.H. Weiler, New York University and Moderator, Professor Erika De Wet, University of Pretoria
  • Plenary Session II: High Courts and Political Power: A Conversation with Three Prominent Jurists with Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, Supreme Court of Canada, Justice Marta Cartabia, Vice President of the Constitutional Court of Italy, Professor András Sajó, Central European University, and moderator: Professor Ran Hirschl, University of Toronto
  • Plenary Panel III: International Courts in the 21st Century with Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Shaheed Fatima, Senior Counsel, UK, Professor Mikael Rask Madsen, iCourts, the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre of Excellence for International Courts, University of Copenhagen, and moderator: Professor Phoebe Okowa, Queen Mary.

Publishers’ stands

Seven publishing companies had stands at the ICON-S 2017 Conference: Cambridge University Press, Edward Elgar Publishing, Eleven International Publishing, Hans Reitzels Forlag, Hart Publishing, Nomos Verlag, and Oxford University Press, which gave participants the opportunity to browse and talk with representatives of the companies.
