New PhD Fellow at iCourts

Günes Ünüvar is a new PhD student in the Autonomization group from September 2013.

Günes ÜnüvarHis research aims to examine the value balancing methods and principles in international investment law jurisprudence and how international investment law would transform itself into an institutionalized system. Cross-border energy investments constitute the main case study of his research. He will be focusing particularly on the ECT arbitration and other international investment arbitration systems such as ICSID and UNCITRAL.

He obtained his LL.B. degree from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey (2010 - Honours). After Bilkent, he proceeded with his legal traineeship in White & Case LLP Ankara Office for a year. He mainly worked on corporate law, competition law, mergers and acquisitions, investment arbitration, mining law, labour law and energy law. He is an admitted lawyer, admitted to Ankara Bar Association and Union of Turkish Bar Associations.

Following his legal traineeship, he completed his LL.M. studies in Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels, Belgium on International and European Law (2012 ? Magna Cum Laude). His LL.M. thesis concerned the investment arbitration clauses on future European Union bilateral investment treaties. He co-authored another article with Prof. Frank Hoffmeister (DG Trade - European Commission), elaborating the recent developments in the EU regarding the foreign direct investment.

Following his graduation from the VUB, he pursued a short-term research in TÜSIAD (the Turkish Association of Business and Industry) EU Representative Office in Brussels, focusing mainly on renewable energy investments in Turkey and the EU.
