Call for Applications - The PhD programme: STAKE

4 PhD Scholarships Available - Stabilizing Kenya by Solving Forest Related Conflicts (STAKE)

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) of the University of Nairobi (UoN) in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark hereby invites interested and qualified citizens from Kenya (holding Masters degree or equivalent) to submit applications for 4 PhD scholarships related to the STAKE-project. Registration is at the University of Nairobi.

The 4 PhD scholarships under the STAKE project are financed by a DANIDA research grant. The scholarships are of three years duration, and will start from July 2012. The PhD scholars will undertake training at PhD level at the University of Nairobi as well as at the University of Copenhagen. The PhD study and research will be closely integrated and coordinated with all the other activities in the STAKE-project.

The overall goal of STAKE is to contribute towards stability in Kenya with a specific study on the ongoing attempt to democratize the governance of the forest resources. The study focuses on 4-5 pre-selected locations within the Mau Forest Complex.

One PhD student will study the role of formal law (exemplified by the New Forest Act of 2005 – FA 2005) in alleviating or reproducing conflict. Two PhD students will study the actual (general and specific) drivers of forest related conflict in Kenya. One PhD student will contribute through a detailed study on the impacts of the implementation of formal law on livelihoods and the role of livelihoods and identities in shaping conflict behaviour. Finally, the STAKE project aims to synthesize the research results across the four PhD studies to provide outreach activities at national to community levels with an aim to deliver impact in practice.

A detailed description of the aim, content and requirements of each of the four PhD scholarships and the required application form is posted on the WMI homepage (http://wmi.uonbi.ac.ke/) and on the University of Copenhagen homepage (www.jura.ku.dk/english/research/stabilizing-kenya ).

Applications must be completed using the STAKE standard research application form (doc) available from the above four given web-sites. And submitted electronically to the following e-mail address ( wmi@uonbi.ac.ke ). Deadline for application is 1st February 2012. Selected candidates will be invited for interview on 12th and 13th April 2012.
