New Chair in International Development Law
University of Copenhagen has created a new chair in international development law. Whilst over the years the University has established itself as a leading institution in research relating to the developing countries, research on the legal aspects thereof has been rather sparse. By establishing the new chair the University sets out to develop its strong position in development research. At the same time the creation means that University of Copenhagen will be amongst the first of the world's leading universities to establish a chair in this field.
International development law is a fairly new legal discipline which cuts across a number of well-known legal fields. Hence, it includes strong elements from EU law, international law, human rights law and WTO law as well as elements from certain parts of national law.
Professor Morten Broberg
As new professor in international development law the Law Faculty has appointed Dr. Morten Broberg as of 15 January 2010. Morten Broberg was born in 1969 and was associate professor in international development law before being appointed professor. He is also consulting senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies and has been a visiting researcher at Oxford University, London School of Economics and Université Robert Schuman in Strasbourg - amongst others. Morten Broberg is the author of an impressive number of articles published in leading international law journals and is also author or co-author of several books.
Morten Broberg is a frequent speaker both in Denmark and abroad, he holds a number of honorary offices, and is member of the editorial committees of a number of journals. Previously he has been head of section in the Danish Ministry of Justice, legal secretary (référendaire) to the President of the European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg and is a qualified lawyer (advokat) from the law firm of Bech-Bruun. During recent years Morten Broberg's research has focused upon international development law and he has been the Law Faculty's representative in the University of Copenhagen's inter-faculty working group in the field.
A strong research environment in the field of international development law
- It is the Law Faculty's expectation that Morten Broberg will be able to establish a strong research environment which will show the flag internationally and which will provide an active contribution to the University's development research, says Dean of the Law Faculty Henrik Dam.
Morten Broberg aims at increasing the Law Faculty's number of legal researchers in the field of international development law over a limited period of time.
- It is my intention to establish such excellent conditions that we will be able to attract a number of highly qualified young researchers who may join in creating a truly dynamic research environment in the international development law field, Morten Broberg explains. And adds:
- At the same time we intend to establish strong relations to foreign researchers in the field - in particular to researchers in developing countries. A central objective of development research necessarily is to contribute to a positive development in the developing countries.
Moreover, Morten Broberg intends to strengthen both education and dissemination in the field of international development law. Another task the new professor will throw himself upon therefore is raising the necessary financing.
- Research is completely dependent upon having the requisite financing, and traditionally international development research has been characterised by a high degree of external financing. This is a task that I will give high priority in my work as professor, Morten Broberg concludes.
